If a gym, employer or wellness company asks you to carry $2M, your policy should pay up to $2M on one claim about your coaching. This guide is for nutrition and health coaches.
The short answer
- A $2M requirement means your Professional Liability (E&O) policy should pay up to $2M per claim for claims about your coaching advice. Larger partners usually ask for it.
- Read the clause closely. A $1M/$2M policy may not meet a clause that asks for $2M per claim.
- $2M may take more review than $1M, and availability depends on your services and underwriting. Morrow can help you find it.
What does a $2M requirement mean for nutrition and health coaches?
Professional Liability (E&O, short for Errors and Omissions) covers claims that your advice or services caused a client a loss. Whether a claim of physical harm is covered depends on the form. Some coaching and Miscellaneous E&O policies cover only financial loss, while health and wellness forms often include bodily injury from your services. A typical clause might read:
Illustrative contract wording
Contractor shall maintain Professional Liability insurance with limits of not less than $2,000,000 per claim and $2,000,000 annual aggregate, covering the coaching and wellness services provided under this Agreement. If written on a claims-made basis, coverage shall be maintained for at least two (2) years after the Agreement ends.
Illustrative example only. Your contract's wording controls.
- Per claim: the most the policy pays for any one claim. Here, $2M.
- Aggregate: the most the policy pays for all claims in one policy year. Here, also $2M.
- $2M/$2M vs $1M/$2M: these are often confused. A $1M/$2M policy pays up to $1M on any one claim, so it may not meet a $2M per claim clause.
- Claims-made: the policy covers claims made and reported while it is active, for work done on or after the retroactive date (the earliest date of work the policy covers).
See Professional Liability (E&O) limits explained.
Who asks nutrition and health coaches for $2M?
A $2M request usually comes from a larger organization:
- Gym chains and fitness studios that bring in outside nutrition coaches.
- Corporate wellness programs that hire coaches for employees.
- Hospital systems and health plans with lifestyle programs.
- Wellness and telehealth companies that contract with independent coaches.

How is $2M built?
A $2M limit may be written as one primary policy (the policy that pays first). It may also be a $1M primary policy plus a $1M excess layer (an extra policy that pays after the first one is used up). Excess should follow form, meaning it uses the same terms as the primary. Availability depends on your services and underwriting. Morrow can help you find $2M.
A commercial umbrella almost never covers Professional Liability. Additional insured status (a party listed on your policy for protection under it) is often more limited on Professional Liability. Some forms allow it for a contracting party, covering only liability from your services. Some contracts accept a certificate of insurance (a one-page proof of coverage). Others ask for more, so check the wording.
Registered dietitians and other licensed providers often buy medical malpractice or healthcare professional liability instead. Morrow can review your services and contract and request quotes for the form that fits.
Good to know
Defense costs can use up the limit. Many Professional Liability policies pay defense costs inside the limit. If defense costs $300,000, only $1.7M may be left to settle a claim on a $2M policy. See defense costs inside and outside limits.
What will underwriters ask for?
An underwriter is the person at the insurer who decides whether to offer coverage and on what terms. For coaches, they usually ask about:
- Your credentials, and whether you hold any health license.
- Whether you diagnose or treat medical conditions, or stay within general coaching.
- Whether you sell supplements, meal plans or products.
- The clients you serve, such as people with diabetes, eating disorders, pregnancy or youth, and when you refer them to a doctor.
- Online or cross-state coaching, revenue, group size, prior claims and your retroactive date.
What affects the cost?
- Services offered. General habit coaching usually costs less to insure than work close to medical care.
- Products and supplements. Selling products can add exposure.
- Revenue and client volume. More clients mean more chances for a claim.
- Limit and structure. A $2M per claim limit usually costs more than a $1M one.
- Claims history, retention and defense terms. Prior claims can raise the price. A higher retention (the amount you pay before the policy pays) usually lowers premium.
Frequently asked questions
Do I need $2M Professional Liability as a nutrition or health coach?
Only if your contract or partner asks for it. A single large partner can require $2M from any contractor. Availability depends on underwriting.
Is $1M/$2M enough if my contract says $2M?
Often not, if the clause says $2M per claim. A $1M/$2M policy pays up to $1M on any one claim. Confirm with the client that a primary policy plus follow-form excess meets the clause.
I carry $1M today. How can I get $2M Professional Liability?
Request new quotes for a $2M policy through Morrow. Morrow can ask carriers to keep your retroactive date and prior acts coverage (coverage for work done before the new policy starts) where the market allows. Keep your current policy until the new one starts. Report any known incident to your current carrier before you switch.
What could a claim against a nutrition or health coach look like?
These are hypothetical. A client with an undisclosed health condition follows your meal plan and says it made their condition worse. That is covered only if the policy includes bodily injury from professional services. Or a participant says your advice led to a costly medical visit. Some policies exclude medical diagnosis and treatment, so check the wording and tell the underwriter exactly what you do.
