$2M Professional Liability (E&O) Insurance for Life Coaches

In this guide

For life coaches whose corporate client asks for $2M: the clause usually means $2M per claim and $2M aggregate, so a $1M/$2M policy may not meet it.

The short answer

  • A $2M Professional Liability (E&O) requirement for a life coach usually means $2M per claim and $2M aggregate, so a $1M/$2M policy may not meet it.
  • $2M is higher than the $1M many coaches carry. It often comes from large employers and health organizations.
  • If you carry $1M today, request new quotes for a $2M policy through Morrow, keeping your retroactive date (the earliest date of work the policy covers) where the market allows. A true $2M per claim limit often takes a broker. Morrow can help you find it.

What does a $2M requirement mean for life coaches?

Professional Liability (E&O, short for Errors and Omissions) covers claims that your coaching, advice or services caused a client harm or a money loss. A $2M clause often reads like this:

Illustrative contract wording

Coach shall maintain Professional Liability insurance with limits of not less than $2,000,000 each claim and $2,000,000 annual aggregate, covering all coaching services provided to Company and its employees. If written on a claims-made basis, coverage shall remain in force for at least two (2) years after this Agreement ends.

Illustrative example only. Your contract's wording controls.

  • Per claim and aggregate: the most the policy pays for one claim, and for all claims in one policy year. This clause asks for $2M on both.
  • Check the certificate. A certificate of insurance (a one-page proof of coverage) may show "$2M" that is only the aggregate. Ask for the per claim limit.
  • Claims-made: Professional Liability almost always pays only for claims made and reported while the policy is active. That is why clauses ask for coverage after the work ends.
  • Coaching, not therapy: If you are also a licensed therapist giving clinical care, you usually need a malpractice policy built for that work. A coaching policy may not cover it.

Who asks life coaches for $2M?

Many clients ask life coaches for $1M. $2M tends to show up when the client is large or many people are coached under one contract. For heavier executive work, see $2M for business and executive coaches.

  • Large employers hiring coaches for leadership or career programs.
  • Corporate wellness programs that place coaches with employer clients.
  • Health plans contracting with coaches for member wellbeing programs.
  • Hospital systems offering coaching outside clinical care.
  • Coaching firms that subcontract work and pass down their client's terms.

How is $2M built?

One primary policy (the policy that pays first) at $2M each claim / $2M aggregate meets this clause most cleanly. Many coaches buy a package that combines General Liability (for injuries and property damage) with Professional Liability, so check the Professional Liability part on its own. Fewer insurers may offer this limit to coaches than $1M, and finding it can take a broker. Morrow can help you find it.

Some clients also accept a $1M primary policy plus a $1M excess layer, a second policy that pays after the first limit is used up. The excess should follow form, meaning it adopts the primary policy's terms, with the same retroactive date. Confirm with the client that primary plus follow-form excess meets the clause. A commercial umbrella almost never counts toward this limit.

Good to know

Hypothetical claims. A struggling client says you should have referred them to a therapist. A business client says your plan cost them their savings. Many policies pay defense costs inside the limit, so legal fees shrink what is left to settle (see defense costs inside or outside limits).

What will underwriters ask for?

An underwriter is the insurer's decision maker on coverage. Expect questions like these:

  • Your coaching types, such as life, career, executive, business or health coaching, and the revenue share of each.
  • Whether you hold a coaching certification or a clinical license.
  • How you handle mental health concerns, including a written referral process.
  • Your client agreement: a clear scope, a statement that coaching is not therapy, and no promised results.
  • How you deliver: one-on-one, group, online or in-person, and how you protect client privacy.
  • Subcontracted coaches, your revenue, prior claims, and whether any client work is for a corporate client with a $2M requirement.

What affects the cost?

  • Coaching focus. Business, financial or health coaching may cost more than general life coaching because possible losses are larger.
  • Number of coaches. A firm with several coaches usually costs more than a solo coach.
  • Revenue and client size. Large corporate contracts mean bigger claims.
  • Marketing and contracts. Income claims or outcome promises can raise the price or narrow options.
  • Retention and terms. Retention is the amount you pay per claim before the policy pays, like a deductible. A higher one usually lowers premium.

Frequently asked questions

I'm a life coach with $1M. How do I get $2M Professional Liability?

Request new quotes through Morrow, either for a new $2M primary policy or for an excess layer above your $1M. Morrow can ask each insurer to keep your retroactive date and prior acts coverage (cover for work done before the new policy starts) where the market allows. Report known incidents to your current carrier before you switch, and avoid any gap.

Can a corporate client be added as additional insured on my Professional Liability?

Usually not, and never automatically. Additional insured means adding someone to your policy so it protects them too. Where one does, it is usually limited to the company's liability from your services. If your contract asks for it, tell Morrow, and it can ask each insurer when requesting quotes. A certificate of insurance alone does not give additional insured status. Check your contract's exact wording and send it to Morrow.

Does a coaching disclaimer replace $2M Professional Liability?

No. A clear agreement that says coaching is not therapy can help, but a client can still bring a claim, and the contract asks for the insurance itself.

Is $1M/$2M enough if my contract says $2M?

Usually not. A $1M/$2M policy pays $1M on any one claim, while a $2M clause usually asks for $2M each claim. Check your contract's exact wording, then ask Morrow to request quotes for a $2M each claim policy.
