Yard Sale Insurance: Coverage, Cost and Same-Day Guide

A yard sale sells used household items from a driveway, lawn or church lot, run by a household, club or organization. Hosts should check whether a homeowners or organization policy already responds, how heavy items are displayed, how cash is handled, and whether a group sale needs its own event liability.

Which guide answers my question?

Which activities should the application describe?

Insurers price and review yard sale insurance from the activity plan, not the event name. Describe who is responsible for each of these arrangements:

  • Identify the household or organization holding the yard sale.
  • Describe guest access to the property and displayed goods.
  • Coordinate vehicle parking and buyers collecting purchases.

What kind of claim is this insurance for?

Suppose a shopper is hurt when a used bookcase propped against the garage wall falls onto her and alleges that the yard-sale host caused the injury. That is the kind of third-party claim event liability insurance may address, subject to the policy terms. If cash from the sale is stolen or consigned items belonging to neighbors are damaged, you may need a separate coverage option; ordinary event liability is not automatically the answer.

What should I have ready for a quote?

  • The legal name of the yard-sale host who will be the named insured.
  • Event dates, setup and teardown times, the venue address and expected daily attendance.
  • The venue contract or permit, including any certificate and additional insured wording it requires.
  • Whether alcohol is served, sold or brought by guests, and who serves it.
  • Hired vendors, performers and equipment rentals, and any activity beyond the list above.

Request a quote with your event details. Submitting the form does not bind insurance.
