Consignment Sale Insurance: Coverage, Cost and Same-Day Guide

A consignment sale collects items from individual sellers, such as children's clothes, toys and gear, and sells them for a share of the proceeds. Organizers should clarify custody of consigned goods, how returns and pickups are handled and whether products liability extends to used items.

Which guide answers my question?

Which activities should the application describe?

Insurers price and review consignment sale insurance from the activity plan, not the event name. Describe who is responsible for each of these arrangements:

  • Identify the consignors and party holding goods.
  • Describe handling, pricing, returns and collection.
  • Coordinate the consignment agreement with property coverage questions.

What kind of claim is this insurance for?

Suppose a shopper is hurt when a used crib on display collapses as she leans on the rail and alleges that the consignment sale organizer caused the injury. That is the kind of third-party claim event liability insurance may address, subject to the policy terms. If consigned goods are stolen or damaged in the organizer's care, since property of others may be excluded, you may need a separate coverage option; ordinary event liability is not automatically the answer.

What should I have ready for a quote?

  • The legal name of the consignment sale organizer who will be the named insured.
  • Event dates, setup and teardown times, the venue address and expected daily attendance.
  • The venue contract or permit, including any certificate and additional insured wording it requires.
  • Whether alcohol is served, sold or brought by guests, and who serves it.
  • Hired vendors, performers and equipment rentals, and any activity beyond the list above.

Request a quote with your event details. Submitting the form does not bind insurance.
