Event Caterer Insurance: Coverage, Cost and Same-Day Guide

A caterer prepares food off site or in a venue kitchen and serves it buffet, family-style or plated at weddings, corporate events and parties. Key questions include coverage for foodborne illness claims, hired servers, vehicles used for delivery and the equipment that travels to every job.

Which guide answers my question?

Which activities should the application describe?

Insurers price and review event caterer insurance from the activity plan, not the event name. Describe who is responsible for each of these arrangements:

  • Identify catering preparation locations and event service duties.
  • Describe cooking, holding and buffet or plated service.
  • Coordinate hired servers, equipment and transport.

What kind of claim is this insurance for?

Suppose a wedding guest suffers a serious allergic reaction after eating a canapé the servers described as nut-free and alleges that the caterer caused the injury. That is the kind of third-party claim event liability insurance may address, subject to the policy terms. If the delivery van crashes on the way to the venue or rented chafing dishes and linens are damaged, you may need a separate coverage option; ordinary event liability is not automatically the answer.

What should I have ready for a quote?

  • The legal name of the caterer who will be the named insured.
  • Event dates, setup and teardown times, the venue address and expected daily attendance.
  • The venue contract or permit, including any certificate and additional insured wording it requires.
  • Whether alcohol is served, sold or brought by guests, and who serves it.
  • Hired vendors, performers and equipment rentals, and any activity beyond the list above.

Request a quote with your event details. Submitting the form does not bind insurance.
