Auction Insurance: Coverage, Cost and Same-Day Guide

An auction brings bidders together to preview and bid on lots, followed by payment and item collection. Organizers should sort out liability for bidders during previews and pickup, who is responsible for consigned items in their care, and what the venue owner requires.

Which guide answers my question?

Which activities should the application describe?

Insurers price and review auction insurance from the activity plan, not the event name. Describe who is responsible for each of these arrangements:

  • Identify the auctioneer and ownership of lots offered.
  • Describe previews, bidding, payment and collection.
  • Coordinate custody of items before and after bidding.

What kind of claim is this insurance for?

Suppose a bidder previewing lots is injured when a stacked piece of furniture slides off a display riser and alleges that the auction organizer caused the injury. That is the kind of third-party claim event liability insurance may address, subject to the policy terms. If a consigned item is damaged or goes missing while in the organizer's custody before pickup, you may need a separate coverage option; ordinary event liability is not automatically the answer.

What should I have ready for a quote?

  • The legal name of the auction organizer who will be the named insured.
  • Event dates, setup and teardown times, the venue address and expected daily attendance.
  • The venue contract or permit, including any certificate and additional insured wording it requires.
  • Whether alcohol is served, sold or brought by guests, and who serves it.
  • Hired vendors, performers and equipment rentals, and any activity beyond the list above.

Request a quote with your event details. Submitting the form does not bind insurance.
